ESQUIRE:Here's a Better Option Than "Man Sandals"

If you're a regular reader of The Wall Street Journal, you may be facing the warmer weather today thinking you're in need of some "dress sandals" for the spring season. Ones that, as this article explains, can be worn to "church and other high functions." Hmm.
First off, there must be some rule that you should never expose your toes in church. Surely that's one place that requires the wearing of real shoes, ones with leather uppers that cover your toes and legitimate soles, regardless of your personal religious beliefs. And also: No man sandals, man. Sure, if you search high and low, you may be able to find a pair that helps you channel your own personal Jesus — leather, strappy, the kind your girlfriend might wear on a vacation in Tulum — but that's no look to be emulating in 2012.
The Journal's piece concludes with this scary advice: "Don't ever give up on finding elegant men's sandals." That seems like a waste of time. Especially when you've got a much better option out there. It's called the espadrille, and while it's also never meant to be worn to church, it's a fantastic option to wear with weekend trousers and other light, summer-ready looks. End your sandal search here and head to the temple of J.Crew, for the latest collaboration you see above. Then, and only then, will you find the salvation you're seeking.

GQ:NUMBER:Lab Sheppard Jacket

NumberLabJacket-635.jpg
The weather has been warming up big time here on the east coast and I've been happily looking to lighten up my jacket accordingly. Spotted on a visit to NUMBER:Lab's NYC outpost, this zip jacket is looking like my go-to weekend wear for the foreseeable future. The lightweight hooded number is made out of breathable cotton pique and features graphic white piping details that make for a cool contrast. The hood's striped fabric gives a nod to summertime seersucker but stays firmly planted in the brand's athletic aesthetic. I'm looking forward to wearing this made-in-NYC number under a blazer now or over a pair of shorts on those chillier summer nights.
$276, available at NUMBER:Lab and number-lab.com

The Calvin Klein empire expands far beyond their Italo Zucchelli-designed Collection line, into the more familiar ck Calvin Klein, Calvin Klein & Calvin Klein Jeans sub-brands. The man responsible for this plethora of modern design is none other than Global Creative Director Kevin Carrigan and we were lucky enough to have him walk us through what the CK man will be wearing this fall. Keeping true to the brand's minimalist aesthetic, Carrigan presented a clean lineup of looks, above, but played with texture to add depth to sportswear pieces put together. The suiting was a real standout, particularly the gray flannel option that was paired with a cool color blocked cream turtleneck and black crewneck combo.
The color blocking also showed up in the form of contrasting raglan sleeves on an of-the-moment abbreviated collar sport shirt. In outerwear we were feeling the relaxed, double-breasted camel coat that would look killer with a pair of the coated black CK Jeans on display. All in all the collection of menswear was an urban dweller's autumn outfit punch list brought to life, but one that was filled with items, like that flannel suit, that wouldn't look out of place in any man's closet.calvin-klein-f12-press-event-032212_ph_billy-farrell-bfa-nyc-com-0133.jpg

GQ:A Q+A with Donald Trump, Scent Enthusiast

donald-trump-success-635.jpg
When you watch Donald Trump on TV, you can tell he has a certain air about him. BUT WHAT DOES THAT AIR SMELL LIKE?! Well, it has top notes of juniper, red currant, and coriander, and will be sold in Macy's this April. Here, The Donald explains.
What do you imagine success smelling like?
I can't say sweetness. I can't say flowery. I would say it has a good scent.
So, those were the qualities you were looking for when you made your new cologne, Success?
Well, we did a lot of testing. I relied on the professionals to a certain extent. I asked them for a range of what's been acceptable over the years and they brought me a lot of things. But I made the final choice.
How long have you been wearing cologne?
I started in my 30s. More or less for formal events. I'd wear it with tuxedos and things. But over the years I think, really, I've changed. I tend to use cologne more. I've always liked sweet smells.
How do you apply cologne? Are you a walk-through-the-cloud guy?
I just spray my neck and behind the ears.
Are there smells you hate?
Well, there are things you don't want to mention. In terms of fragrance, sometimes I smell things on people that are just terrible—things that make you not like them. We tried to stay away from those things.
What should someone smell like for an interview?
I would say it depends on how close they're going to get. If I'm doing an interview with a person from my desk, the person's fifteen feet away or more, then I don't smell the fragrance.
So have you ever fired someone because they literally stunk?
No. Actually, maybe that's not a correct answer. I've had people where it's a little unpleasant. Not because of the cologne—I've never fired anybody for the wrong cologne—but I have fired people that, and maybe it wasn't the main reason, didn't exactly smell good. Maybe that was an early indicator, as they say.
Success by Trump will be sold as a four-piece collection and range from $14 to $55.
