The brand Persol reminds us of Steve McQueen and classic 714s with the blue lenses, which were re-released late last year. But this summer, our mind is wandering to a new, limited-edition style (which was announced during the last Milan shows) and is just now landing on shelves. The Roadster, as it's called, was inspired by an automobile-inspired pair of sunglasses that Giuseppe Ratti first created in 1917, some 20 years before he launched his now famous company: Persol.
Though it's available in two models, the Roadster GT (above) in a glossy black with grey lenses is the sleekest option, updating — or, actually, backdating — the 649s and 714s by removing the keyhole at the bridge, adding metal detailing that's supposed to suggest vintage car grills, and incorporating slightly rounder lenses. All sunglass speak, roughly, for "badass."
And, as coincidence has it, great for The Summer Solstice. Originally intended for driving, the Roadsters also have special photochromatic lenses: If you head out and buy a pair now, the lenses will constantly adjust until the sun falls tonight (whenever that may be). Unfortunately, still no excuse for wearing them at night.
