ESQUIRE:Ray Ban's New Aviators

It's hard to argue that there's a pair of sunglasses more classic than gold or silver Ray-Ban aviators. The only problem is that those metals may bend out of shape while you're spearfishing, kite-boarding, rock-hurling, lion-hunting, and participating in the other extremely macho activities that this summer promises. Actually, it's probably not a good idea to even throw those shades into your man-bag without securing them in their case first.
That's what makes Ray-Ban's new "Light Force" collection truly excellent. They've taken that same iconic shape, and updated it in a "thermoplastic" resin that's not only incredibly light on the face, but also creates a pair of sunglasses that bend, flex, and would be damn near impossible to break. This new material makes the arms are a bit thicker, too, plus you've now got the opportunity to add some color above the collar: The frames and lenses come in complementing olive green, true blue, maroon (as you see above), a sort of charcoal shade, then classic black. All will be available next month, at Sunglass Hut, for $215. So, if you really want to test them out, it's not too late to start planning that safari. (Or, you know, trip to your local city beach.)
