If you were crazy enough to wait in line for 17 hours, your very own iPhone 4S could land in your pocket this weekend. It's no iPhone 5, sure, but you'll still probably want some way to protect the damn thing. Fortunately, designers have begun making cases that look almost as nice as the hardware itself; all you have to do is figure out what material you want, and we'll take it from there...
Metal: The closest thing you can get to keeping the phone naked are the metal and mixed-media covers from EXOvault, which are made by hand in Brooklyn. Some versions — using gold or brass — cost nearly as much as the phone itself, yet this aluminum model is streamlined enough, and for a more palatable price.

Plastic: Fortunately for everyone, gone are the days when you have to use the word "bumper" in polite conversation. Incase's been upping their design ante with each new season, and their latest model — which riffs on your favorite pair of sunglasses — will look great with fall looks. Note, though, the tortoise effect's a lot stronger on the iPhone with the white back.

Wood: If you've got a bohemian streak, or just understand that wood is durable and light, then Rootcases offers some strong options: This one's made from South Asian bamboo, with a nice grain and solid construction. One downside is it make your sleek phone feel a bit chunky.
